Beautiful Robes is a family business based in Melbourne, Australia that offers an exclusive collection of sleep wear, day wear and authentic Japanese-made kimonos.
Founded in 2010 by Alison Sewell, Beautiful Robes brings everyday luxury and style to women and men who value comfort and quality in and around the home.
The Beautiful Robes story began in 2010 when Alison discovered she had misplaced her much-loved 20-year-old kimono. Unable to find a replacement in Australia sharing the same style and quality, Alison turned to Japan. After months of research – and with the help of a Japanese friend for translation - she found one in Kyoto that ticked every box: hand-made quality, suitable for every climate and, of course, with a classic design.
Building on more than 20 years' working in marketing, customer service and business management, Alison was inspired to establish Beautiful Robes and share the simplicity and elegance of the Japanese kimono.
Seven years later, Beautiful Robes’ signature kimonos continue to be carefully handmade in Kyoto, Japan by highly skilled artisans with more than 50 years’ experience. And with a team with a serious attention to detail, they deliver thousands of gorgeous pieces all over the globe each year.
Alison has always deeply admired the Japanese aesthetic:
“From architecture and immaculate gardens, to ceramics and even the presentation of food, I love how every aspect of Japanese culture takes a careful and considered approach to functionality without compromising on style.
“Beautiful Robes is all about appreciating practical sophistication. We dress beautifully to go out, but often overlook what we wear at home.”
Alison’s aim is to make every Beautiful Robes customer feel stylish, from the moment they wake up, to winding down after a busy day:
“I want to add a layer of luxury into our everyday routines that instils a sense of calm and relaxation.
“I believe it’s important to celebrate the simple pleasures in life. Whether it’s getting ready for the day, or for a special occasion, our collections have something for everyone.”
